Resources and Services
Each student is assigned a career advisor based upon his/her major. Meeting with a career advisor helps students make informed career choices and better decisions; become more aware of interests, skills, values, and personality in relationship to career; and improve professional skills.
If your child needs assistance with deciding on a career, finding an internship, or searching for a job, CDS offers assistance with all of these areas, including:
- Curricular Advisement for Students Undecided on a Major
- Self Assessment
- Career Exploration Tools
- Career Fairs
- Experiential Education (Co-op, Internships, and Community Service Opportunities)
- Interviewing Skills
- Job Search Strategies
- Managing Job Offers and Salary Negotiation
- On-Campus Interviewing Program
- Resume and Cover Letter Preparation
Students can make an appointment with their career advisor by accessing their account on CDSlink. To determine your student’s career advisor you can go to Career Advisement and Self-Assessment. Career advising is available to all undergraduate and graduate students and alumni.
CDS hosts numerous workshops and seminars each semester on a wide range of topics including Resume Writing, Job Search Strategies, Interviewing, and Business Etiquette. Employers frequently visit campus for Information Sessions, Employer Panels, Resume Review, and Practice Interviews. For additional information, please visit the CDS Events/Workshop Schedule.
One of the key factors that employers look for in entry-level hires is major-related work experience. Students who graduate with major-related work experience typically receive more employment interviews and offers than those who graduate with no major-related work experience at all. CDS offers many opportunities for your student to gain experience in his/her field while in school. Programs include Cooperative Education, and Community and Public Service. CDS also posts full-time, part-time, and general internship positions through our online job board, CDSlink.
CDS hosts two career fairs each academic year to provide students with opportunities to meet with employers for full-time, part-time, co-op, internship, and summer jobs. Over 160 quality companies attended each fair. Visit the Career Fair page for more information about upcoming and past career fairs.
On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) is a program for graduating students. It provides your student with the opportunity to meet one-to-one with hiring employers on campus. During the Fall and Spring semesters, company representatives are on campus interviewing for full-time positions. There is a simple process that your student must complete before participating in this program. CDS encourages each student to begin this process early by attending the OCI Workshop in the second semester of junior year or first semester senior year so as to not miss out on any opportunities. For additional information, check the On-Campus Interviewing Program Schedule.
More than 500 graduating students and recent alumni participate in OCI each semester, and OCI produces our most effective recruitment results. Of job offers extended through NJIT recruitment services, the largest percentage, 35%, come from the OCI program.
