Environmental Health and Safety

As was recently announced, the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is now a part of Real Estate Development and Capital Operations (REDCO).  With the beginning of a new academic year, NJIT is working with EHS specialists from Marsh Risk Consulting and other state academic institutions to develop a comprehensive series of EHS training programs for all undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff working in laboratories.  A schedule of training for the 2015 Fall semester is available on the training tab.

In a collaborative spirit, EHS staff will begin to perform more comprehensive and frequent reviews of laboratories to assist with regulatory guidance and to improve students’, researchers’ and faculty’s EHS awareness of NJIT’s University Safety and Environmental Management (USEM) plans.  During September, fume hood and exhaust systems throughout campus are being inspected and serviced in coordination with the Physical Plant Technical Services division.  Principal investigators should verify that their exhaust systems are functioning properly before conducting any experiments.  If you have any concerns or need information regarding this effort, please contact Physical Plant Technical Services at x3123.

With the recent retirement of Norman Van Houten, PhD, a search is underway for a new Director of Environmental Health and Safety.  The co-chairs of the search committee are Robert Gjini and Norma Rubio.  Please feel free to reach out to Rob or Norma with any input you may have with this important search, or if you have any EHS questions or need guidance.
