What is First Year Connections?

First Year Connections (FYC) is a mandatory, overnight orientation program for new NJIT undergraduate students.  During the program, you will meet current NJIT students, faculty and staff to help you understand the skills necessary to be successful at the university - both academic and social. You will be given the opportunity to meet with your advisor to understand the expectations of NJIT and receive guidance on academic planning. You will learn about innovative research and programs, understand First Year Students course scheduling, and obtain advising on majors, minors, and fields of study.


Do I have to attend First Year Connections?

First Year Connections is mandatory for all incoming First Year Students. It is the only way for you to receive the information you need to begin your studies at NJIT, receive academic advisement, and register for classes.


Do I have to stay overnight?

Yes, since the program sessions go until 9:30 pm at night, and begins on Day 2 at 8:00 am, we request that all students stay overnight. Students will stay in Cypress Hall, and rooms are assigned one gender to a floor. All students will have mandatory bed-checks and both the FYC staff, the Cypress Hall staff, and Public Safety will be on hand to manage any issues.


How long is First Year Connections?

First Year Connections is a two-part, overnight program. FYC 1.0 is a two-day program occurring in June. Check in will begin at 8:30 am at Cypress Hall. The welcome session will begin at 9:30 am and will continue until 9:30 pm, followed up by social programs. Day two will begin again at 8:00 the next day and will end by 2 pm. FYC 2.0 is part two of orientation that taking place over two days in August prior to the first day of class. More information about FYC can be found here.


When is First Year Connections?

For Summer 2015, FYC 1.0 will be held every Wednesday and Thursday during the month of June. For more information contact: FYC@njit.edu or call 973-596-5364.

For late admits, out-of-state, and international students, we offer an FYC 1.0 session on August 25 before classes start.

FYC 2.0 is during the latter part of week before classes begin on August 27-28.


How do I register for First Year Connections?

 Invitations to FYC will begin to be emailed to deposited students in late April on a rolling weekly basis. Only students who have paid their deposits (http://tuitiondeposit.njit.edu) and who have taken their math placement test will be invited to register for First  Year Connections.


What if I have not received information regarding FYC in the mail or by email?

Can I leave early or arrive late to First Year Connections?

It is the responsibility of the students attending FYC to make arrangements to attend the entire program; excuses such as 'I have work' or 'I have an appointment' will not be accepted and you might have to attend a second session of the FYC program.  We will provide attendance notices to all students attending our program at the end of the day; if your high school requires advance notice, you can e-mail our office with your request at: FYC@njit.edu..


What if I cannot attend any of the June First Year Connections session dates?

To have the best orientation experience possible, you should make every effort to attend one of the June orientation dates, however,  a make-up date will be available during the summer. Students will be notified after the June dates are complete. International and out-of-state students can attend FYC 1.0 in August. If you have any additional questions or concerns please contact the FYC office at FYC@njit.edu. You will not be able to make up FYC 2.0, therefore, please plan accordingly.


What do I bring to First Year Connections?

  • Pillow and linen/sleeping bag
  • Toiletries, soap, shampoo
  • Casual clothes and comfortable shoes
  • Pen or pencil, folder & paper for notes/handouts
  • Umbrella (in case of rain)
  • UCID and password
  • Spending money to buy NJIT paraphernalia
  • Health Services packet http://www.njit.edu/healthservices
  • One form of identification with a photo (driver’s license, High School ID)


How do I get to NJIT?

You can also take the Newark Light Rail from Newark Penn Station or any station along the way to the Warren Street/NJIT stop. Schedules for the light rail can be found here.

Where do I park when I attend First Year Connections?

Can parents attend FYC?

Yes, there is a designated program that parents can attend during FYC 1.0 for a small fee. Please CLICK HERE for more information. There is no program for parents at FYC 2.0 in August.


Do you make accommodations for observant Muslims?

Yes, the Campus Center meditation room will be available during scheduled times for prayer. During Ramadan, there will also be time, place, and dinner available to break the fast. While we unfortunately cannot provide Halal food, all meals will have a vegetarian option and the meal to break the fast during Ramadan will also be vegetarian.
