ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp
Date: July 9 - July 20, 2017
Theme: “Engineering Your Place in Space”
The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is organized to provide activities, experiments, projects, and field experiences to students entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in the Fall 2016 to enrich their mathematics, science, technology, and communication skills.
The EMBHSSC is a two-week, academic, residential camp that emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics and science knowledge and skills while introducing them to college life and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path. Campers will attend classes that include problem solving, research, critical thinking and communication skills incorporated into biology, chemistry, physics, environmental sciences, earth sciences, engineering, technology and design concepts, and go on field excursions. Certified secondary teachers, university faculty, and other professionals will serve as instructors.
The camp will be held on the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) campus. Housing will be provided in Cypress Hall dormitory on the NJIT campus.
Camp participants will be selected from urban areas of Essex, Union, Passaic, Hudson and Bergen Counties that are located within 10 miles of the NJIT campus.
- Parent/Guardian and student complete requested information on the student application form.
- Parent/Guardian or student gives the request for records to the student’s school registrar.
- Parent/Guardian or student gives a recommendation form to the student’s current science teacher and current mathematics teacher.
- Student writes a 250-word essay.
Send the completed Student Application Form, essay, records and teacher recommendations in one envelope to New Jersey Institute of Technology, Center for Pre-College Programs, Campbell Hall, 4th Floor, University Heights, Newark, NJ 07102-1982 by 3 p.m. on Monday, April 3rd. *Please hand deliver or send through regular U.S. mail only – all other delivery methods including overnight services do not come directly to our office and may be lost or delayed.* If your application is incomplete (all documents are not received by the deadline date) the application will not be considered. You will receive notification on the status of the application by mail no later than Friday, May 26th. Students may be interviewed prior to being selected, if deemed necessary.
