IMPROVING TRAFFIC AT PENN STATION
Lazar Spasovic, director of IITC and NJCTIP, and E. Keir Opie, principal transportation engineer at IITC, recently completed a study for New Jersey Department of Transportation and New Jersey Transit that analyzed auto and bus movements to, from, and around Penn Station in Newark. The purpose of the project was to model the impacts of proposed traffic improvements to the station's pick-up/drop-off facilities and the surrounding roadway infrastructure.
Through the use of advanced traffic microscopic simulation software, the analysis provided overwhelming support for New Jersey Transit's proposed plans to provide exclusive bus lanes in and out of Newark Penn Station on Raymond Boulevard. The study also examined the traffic impacts of the proposed changes to the pick-up and drop-off areas for the terminal on Raymond Plaza West and Raymond Plaza East.
