New Alumni Association of NJIT
In 2002 NJIT engaged the consulting firm of eAdvancement, a recognized leader in assessing and helping to strengthen the participation of alumni volunteers in university alumni programs, to review the university’s alumni relations efforts. The review was prompted by the lack of integration at the time of efforts in alumni programming with the offices of University Advancement, i.e., development (fund raising) and communications (website, magazines, admissions recruitment materials, e-newsletters) as well as the perception that NJIT had not leveraged to advantage the enormous pride NJIT alumni have in their degree.

As recommended by eAdvancement, a Strategic Planning Task Force was established, and a Strategic Plan for Alumni Relations was developed (see Other Planning Initiatives at Since that time, plan implementation has proceeded. The Office of Alumni Relations was established, and a number of programs have been initiated, e.g., Alumni (Class) Reunion Weekend each spring during which approximately 15 anniversary classes of NJIT gather on campus for three days of activities and events.

In order to cement short-term successes in alumni programming into long-standing traditions that will ensure the involvement of alumni in advancing the mission of their alma mater, an NJIT Alumni Leadership Summit was held on May 2nd and 3rd this spring. The Summit was attended by twenty-five NJIT alumni – all active leaders in the life of the university. This leadership group was convened to develop a new structure of alumni governance and involvement in the life of the university and to ensure a strong and lasting bond between alumni and their alma mater.

The Summit concluded with the formation of a new Alumni Association of NJIT, fully integrated into the university’s Office of Alumni Relations, as part of the university’s Division of University Advancement. The new association’s mission is to advance the interests of NJIT, expand our alumni network, and continue developing leadership opportunities for alumni to be active in the affairs of the university.

NJIT alumni are very proud of their degree and the rigorous education they received. As the new Alumni Association of NJIT works in partnership with the university to strengthen NJIT and promote its academic reputation, the value of every graduate’s degree is enhanced. I am looking forward to working with the new association in the months and years ahead.
