For example, NSF funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (C-SOPS) brings together a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists as well as industry leaders to improve the way pharmaceuticals, foods and agriculture products are manufactured. C-SOPS will focus on advancing the scientific foundation for the optimal design of SOPS with advanced functionality while developing the methodologies for their active control and manufacturing.
The EDC at NJIT is home to more than 90 high-tech and life-science companies. Located on the campus of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, EDC companies have access to NJIT facilities and can partner with researchers to help grow their business. Research Focus, Centers and Grants
NJIT has become a leader in interdisciplinary applied research with more than $100 million annually in funding from governmental agencies and the private sector. The university has built its research program around multi-disciplinary efforts that encourage partnerships among various disciplines, as well as with other educational institutions, private enterprise and government agencies. These initiatives concentrate resources on the most promising of emerging technologies, helping to create new industries.
NJIT’s strategic plan stresses the need to expand research and intellectual property over the next decade, including the development of several nationally recognized centers of excellence and several niche areas critical to economic development in New Jersey.

|Christopher Funkhouser, assistant professor of humanities will use his Fulbright Scholarship to study digital literature at Multimedia University in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, a cutting edge, technological university.|
|Nancy Jackson, associate professor of geography was awarded the Turin Chair as part of the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program. She conducted research on coastal and ecosystem management and lectured on International Environmental Policy at the Polytechnic Institute of Turin, Italy during the 2004-2005 academic year.|
|Lou Kondic, associate professor of mathematical sciences, was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to support his research on “Dynamics of Non-Newtonian Liquid Films involving Contact Lines.” He will visit several research locations in Argentina.|

Technology Development, Intellectual Property and Patents
The Office of Technology Development manages the intellectual property created by New Jersey Institute of Technology employees and is responsible for obtaining appropriate patent or copyright protection on NJIT-owned intellectual property. University researchers seek new knowledge to improve processes and products for industry. Through public and private partnerships and economic development efforts, the university helps to grow new business ventures that fuel the economy.
A strong applied research program is the very core of the technological research university, generating the advances that fuel a knowledge-based economy.
