A courtesy appointment is reserved for those who are currently employed full time by another university, company, laboratory, etc. either within the United States, or elsewhere. These individuals are fully funded by his /her institution. This is a no pay/ no benefits position with NJIT. There are two types of courtesy appointments at NJIT; an Affiliated Faculty appointment and a Visiting Scholar appointment. Please read below for further distinction between the two types of appointments.
This title is usually approved for an individual who wishes to advise graduate students (as a secondary adviser) or be on a dissertation committee. A proposed affiliated faculty member cannot apply for grants at NJIT nor receive any pay from the institution, through grants or otherwise. These appointments cannot exceed three years.
A Visiting Scholar is expected to engage collaborative research with existing NJIT faculty. If no such relationship exists with an NJIT faculty member, this title will not be appropriate. A proposed Visiting Scholar member cannot apply for grants at NJIT nor receive any pay from the institution, through grants or otherwise. These appointments cannot exceed one year.
A Visiting Scholar must be an employee of another university, research lab, or company, and is expected to engage in collaborative research with existing NJIT faculty. If the researcher is currently a student at a foreign university, please refer to "Prescribed Study".

This process is collaborative among the offices of the Department of Human Resources, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Development and the Provost and Senior Executive Vice President.
