What Is Green Civic Engagement?
College students are expressing their care and concern about green issues that impact our society. Students have the time, energy, intelligence, resources and idealism to help solve challenges related to the environment. Through civic engagement, students who volunteer for green projects become part of the movement to mobilize person power and resources necessary to invest in the environmental well being of communities and make sustainable differences in the lives of others.
NJIT provides resources for those interested in green initiatives. Students can learn more about sustainability and green events on campus. Through blogs, students share ideas, express opinions, and find others who have similar interests.
USGBC@NJIT (US Green Building Council)- Connects members to people, knowledge, and tools needed to green the built environment
Engineers Without Borders- non profit humanitarian organization that partners with developing countries to improve their quality of life, including construction of sustainable systems. The group can be contacted at Colton Hall, Room 251.
A significant percentage of today’s students have expressed a desire to work in careers that are good for the planet. Even greater percentages have indicated that they wish to work for companies or organizations that are proactively reducing humans' impact on the environment or promoting its restoration. Given this tremendous interest, we have created Green Careers, a website for students seeking to match their passion for the environment with a career that can make a difference.

Green employers are companies and organizations that have been certified or highly recognized as being eco-friendly from multiple sources including Ceres, EPA’s Green Power Partnership, and or The Vault Guide to Green Programs. We recognize that new certifying entities for green companies and employers are regularly evolving. As it is our intent to be as inclusive as possible, we greatly welcome all legitimate requests by employers to be added to this list. Employers seeking to be included as a green company on this site should please contact Career Development Services at cdsjobs@njit.edu.
Green jobs and internship postings contain a database of opportunities that are listed specifically for NJIT students and graduates. Once here simply follow the instructions for creating an account, uploading your resume, and applying to green jobs.
Environmental engineers are essential participants in the planning, design and construction of waste water and potable water treatment plants, solid waste disposal systems, site remediation and emission control measures, and other similar projects. In today’s green market, major corporations, government agencies, private consulting and construction firms, and universities are just some of the organizations that employ environmental engineers.
Students who graduate from the Geoscience program are capable of solving a wide spectrum of problems related to engineering, geology and the environment. Most civil engineering projects involve a thorough analysis of site geology to arrive at satisfactory design solutions. In recent years, the importance of geologic factors in design has intensified, as projects require a high level of environmental protection and restoration. Solving problems of this nature is complex, and requires considerable interaction between the fields of civil engineering and geoscience. Students can find employment as a geoscience engineer or work in the allied fields of civil engineering, environmental engineering, and geology.
Materials Science and Engineering is concerned with the relation between the structure and properties of materials, factors which control the internal structure, and processes for altering the structure and properties. It is a natural progression to apply material science principles to new advances in the built environment and retrofitting and updating older resources.
