Assistantships and Awards

There are over 300 teaching and research assistantships in academic and research departments, which are funded internally or externally.

Non-academic departments also employ students as graduate assistants. Duties range from academic support to day-to-day operation of administrative offices.

Research Assistant Research assistants conduct research under the supervision of NJIT faculty.
Teaching Assistant Teaching assistants conduct recitation, discussion, laboratory, or other sections of elementary or intermediate undergraduate-level courses, under supervision of permanent faculty. These duties are considered part-time work and typically include six to nine class contact hours per week.
Grader A grader is appointed for part-time service and grades course work under the direction and supervision of a faculty member. Graders may be hired by an academic department on an hourly basis.
Provost Doctoral Assistantships
  • Eligibility: full-time entering PhD students
  • Years 1 & 2: University funded stipend of $25,000 per year, plus tuition and fees
  • Years 3 & 4: Grant funded stipend of $25,000 per year, plus tuition and fees
  • Nominations are made by chairs and deans with concurrence by the Associate Provost of Graduate Studies
